Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey)

Our first day trip, Highclere Castle made famous by the Downton Abbey TV Series.  Sadly, no photos allowed inside the actual castle, but the grounds were beautiful.  We had booked in to a talk by Lady Canarvon, about the history of the castle and some of it’s family history, very interesting.  For example, the castle was in fact a hospital during a first world war, a full on hospital, not just a convalescing facility as portrayed in the tv series.

Highclere Castle is a country house in the Jacobethan style, with a park designed by Capability Brown. The 5,000-acre estate is in Hampshire, England, United Kingdom, about 5 miles south of Newbury, Berkshire.

Some images of the castle and church, with the gardens.
